How does an ENT doctor examine you?
The doctor uses small lighted instruments to look into the ear canal and eardrum, the inside of the nose and the throat. The examination is usually quick and painless. Some cases call for a thin scope to see further; if one is suggested for you, ask our team whether it is available.
For hearing problems, tell the doctor when you first noticed the change and whether it affects one ear or both. Avoid cleaning your ears with cotton buds before the visit, as they can push wax further in and make the blockage worse.
When are ear, nose or throat symptoms an emergency?
Some ear, nose and throat problems need attention within hours. Don’t wait for a clinic appointment in the following situations: go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call the Saudi Red Crescent on 997.
- Difficulty breathing or a high-pitched noise when breathing in
- Being unable to swallow, or drooling, with a severe sore throat
- A nosebleed that hasn’t stopped after 20 minutes of steady pressure
- Sudden loss of hearing in one ear
- Something stuck in the nose or ear, especially a small button battery
Common questions
Can ear wax be removed at the clinic?
Wax is one of the most common causes of a blocked ear, and the doctor decides after examining you how best to deal with it. Ask our team when you book about wax removal, and avoid digging at it with sharp objects or cotton buds.
When does tonsillitis need a specialist?
Most sore throats settle within a few days. See an ENT doctor if tonsillitis keeps coming back several times a year, if it comes with loud snoring or pauses in breathing at night, or if one side of the throat is swollen. Only the doctor can decide whether surgery is needed.
Is snoring worth getting checked?
Light snoring is common, but get it checked if it is loud and constant, if someone notices you stop breathing during sleep, or if you feel sleepy all day. These can be signs of obstructive sleep apnoea, and assessment starts with an examination of the nose and throat.
