What does an eye examination involve?
An examination usually begins with reading a letter chart to measure how clearly you see. The doctor then looks at the surface of the eye and the eyelids under bright light and magnification. To see the retina at the back of the eye, the doctor may put in drops that widen the pupil.
These drops can leave your vision blurred and sensitive to light for several hours, so it’s better not to drive afterwards and to come with someone if you can. If you wear contact lenses, ask when booking whether to take them out before the examination.
When is an eye problem an emergency?
Some eye symptoms can threaten your sight if treatment is delayed, so don’t wait for a clinic appointment. Go straight to the nearest hospital emergency department, or call the Saudi Red Crescent on 997, if you have:
- Sudden loss of vision, even if it comes back
- A sudden shower of floaters or flashes of light, or a shadow spreading across your vision
- Severe eye pain with redness, headache and nausea
- A chemical splash in the eye (rinse it with clean running water straight away)
- A direct blow to the eye or something stuck in it
Common questions
Can I get a glasses prescription at the clinic?
The eye doctor checks your vision and tells you whether you need glasses. Ask our team when you book about having a glasses prescription issued, and bring your current glasses so the doctor can compare the old and new measurements.
How often should people with diabetes have their eyes checked?
People with diabetes are usually advised to have a retina check at least once a year, even when their vision seems fine, because diabetic eye changes can begin without symptoms. Your doctor may suggest more frequent checks depending on your results.
Does a red eye always need a doctor?
Not always. Many red eyes are mild and clear up within a few days, for example from allergy or strain. See a doctor if the redness comes with pain, blurred vision or strong sensitivity to light, or if you wear contact lenses, as it may be an infection that needs treatment.
