  • A bulge in the abdomen or groin that shows when standing or coughing
  • Piles (haemorrhoids) or an anal fissure
  • A lump or cyst under the skin
  • An abscess or collection of pus
  • Pain in the upper right abdomen after fatty meals

  • A wound that needs assessment or follow-up

Does seeing a surgeon mean you’ll need an operation?

Not necessarily. Many people come to the surgical clinic for a diagnosis and an opinion, and many conditions are managed with monitoring or lifestyle changes. The surgeon examines you, may request tests or X-rays inside the polyclinic, and then explains the options and the benefits and risks of each.

If surgery is recommended, ask our team where it would take place, how to prepare, how long recovery is likely to take, and when your follow-up visit will be. Take your time, and ask every question you have before you decide.

When is abdominal pain a surgical emergency?

Some surgical problems can’t be put off until a clinic appointment. Go straight to the nearest hospital emergency department, or call the Saudi Red Crescent on 997, if you notice any of these signs:

  • Pain that starts around the belly button, moves to the lower right side and gets worse
  • A hernia that has become painful and firm and won’t go back in
  • A swollen abdomen with vomiting and not passing wind or stool
  • Severe pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin
  • A deep wound or bleeding that won’t stop

Common questions

Do I need a referral to see the surgeon?

You can book with the surgeon directly if your problem is clear, such as a lump under the skin or a hernia. If you aren’t sure what is causing your symptoms, it may be better to start with a GP, who can direct you after an examination. Our team can help you choose.

Does a hernia always need an operation?

Not always, and not always straight away. The decision depends on the type and size of the hernia, the symptoms it causes and your general health. A hernia does not usually go away by itself, though, so it’s worth having it assessed and knowing the warning signs.

Is surgery the only treatment for piles?

No. Many cases improve with more fibre and fluids in the diet and with non-surgical treatments. The surgeon assesses how advanced the piles are and suggests the most suitable approach. Any bleeding from the back passage should be checked to rule out other causes.
