When to come to the emergency department

The emergency department is for health problems that can’t wait for a clinic appointment. A doctor will assess you, give you urgent care and explain the next steps, including referral to a hospital if your condition needs it.

Come in, or ask someone to bring you, if you notice any of these:

  • A high fever with unusual drowsiness, especially in a young child
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing that isn’t easing
  • A deep cut that may need stitches
  • A fall or injury with severe pain, or a possible broken bone
  • Sudden, severe pain in the abdomen
  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhoea with signs of dehydration
  • A burn, or an allergic reaction with a rash or mild swelling

When to call 997 instead

If a situation is life-threatening, don’t drive the patient yourself. Call the Saudi Red Crescent ambulance on 997 straight away. Paramedics can start treatment before you reach hospital.

Call 997 for any of the following:

  • Someone isn’t breathing, or is struggling badly to breathe
  • Someone is unconscious or not responding
  • Severe bleeding that won’t stop
  • Signs of a stroke: a drooping face, weakness in an arm or leg, or sudden trouble speaking
  • Chest pain that could be a heart attack
  • A seizure that lasts a long time or keeps coming back
  • Swelling of the face or throat with trouble breathing after contact with an allergen

Common questions

Do I need an appointment for the emergency department?

No, you don’t need an appointment. The emergency department sees patients as they arrive, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The most urgent cases are usually seen first, so waiting times can vary depending on how busy the department is.

Is the emergency department open on Fridays?

Yes. The clinics are closed on Fridays, but the emergency department and the pharmacy stay open 24 hours. If your problem is urgent, come straight to the emergency department. If it can wait, book a clinic appointment for another day.

When should I call 997 instead of coming in?

Call 997 straight away for anything life-threatening, such as someone not breathing, unconscious, bleeding heavily, or showing signs of a stroke or heart attack. The ambulance comes to you and care starts on the way, which is safer than travelling by private car.

This page is general information, not a substitute for seeing a doctor. In a life-threatening emergency, call the Saudi Red Crescent on 997 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. For other urgent problems, our emergency department is open 24 hours.
