When doctors use X-rays

An X-ray is a quick, painless test that takes pictures of bones and some other parts of the body, such as the chest. Doctors often request one after a fall or injury, when a chest infection is suspected, or to check how a fracture is healing.

If you need a different kind of scan, ask our team whether it’s available at the polyclinic before you come.

Before your X-ray

Preparation for an X-ray is usually simple. A few things help:

  • Tell the team if you are pregnant or might be
  • You may be asked to remove jewellery and metal items from the area being imaged
  • Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to take off
  • Bring your request form and any previous X-rays you have
  • Follow the technician’s instructions, such as keeping still or holding your breath for a moment

Common questions

Are X-rays safe?

X-rays use a low dose of radiation, and doctors request them when the benefit for diagnosis outweighs the risk. If you are pregnant or think you might be, tell the team before the X-ray so the doctor can choose the safest option for you.

Can I have an X-ray without an appointment?

Booking ahead online on our patient portal, by phone on 920020166 or WhatsApp on 057 011 8287 is recommended. If you have an urgent injury, such as a fall with severe pain, come to the emergency department, which is open 24 hours, and the doctor will decide whether you need an X-ray.

Do you offer CT, MRI or ultrasound scans?

Please ask our team before you come. The polyclinic has X-ray on site. For any other type of imaging, such as CT, MRI or ultrasound, call 920020166 or message us on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you what is currently available.
