Before the procedure

Circumcision is a common procedure. It is usually done for newborns, and it can also be done for older children and adults. It starts with an assessment by the doctor to confirm the procedure is suitable and that nothing calls for it to be delayed or referred.

Tell the doctor about any family history of bleeding disorders, and about any allergies or medicines. If a baby was born early or has a health problem, the doctor will advise on the right timing.

Questions worth asking at the assessment:

  • Does my child need to fast or prepare beforehand?
  • How will pain be managed?
  • How do I care for the wound, and when is the follow-up?
  • Which signs mean we should come back straight away?

Aftercare

You’ll be given aftercare instructions suited to the patient’s age and condition. Follow them closely. Some redness and mild swelling in the first few days is common.

Come to the emergency department, open 24 hours, if you notice any of the following:

  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop with gentle pressure
  • Redness or swelling that is getting worse, or a discharge that looks like pus
  • A high temperature
  • A child not passing urine for several hours after the procedure
  • Constant crying, or pain that doesn’t ease with the pain relief the doctor advised

Common questions
